- 2011 : Implementation of an observatory to analyse the use of the Stevenson trail (profile, satisfaction, expectations and volumes)
Further to the 2010 study (see below), a lighter protocol was implemented for the 2011 season in order to continue collection of information relative to the use of the trail.
This includes 3 eco-counters along the trail and a questionnaire distributed to hikers. 558 copies were returned to the association in 2011, ensuring a reliable set of results.
With regards to user profiles, the 2010 figures which can be seen in the summary report were confirmed in the 2011 analyses.
Volume of use is currently stable, with an estimated 6 180 hikers in 2011.

Long distance hiking is a popular tourist activity but one which is studied very little, both from quantitative and qualitative points of view.
Within the framework of its development strategy, the Association wished to establish a study to produce precise statistical data relative to selected observation criteria. It commissioned Traces TPI, a consultancy specialised in outdoor activities, to carry out the survey over the 2010 season (April to October).
In addition to calculating visitor numbers, the study aimed to:
- define the profile of hikers and their consumer habits
- estimate the financial impact of this activity for the territories
- evaluate what the hikers appreciate and what they would like…
The global aim of the study is to be able to respond to visitor requirements and to measure the impact of the trail on the local economy.
This study is the first of its kind in the hiking world.
The GR 70, or Stevenson trail, is the first route to carry out a study that looks at the profile of hikers and the economic impact that they have on the territory.
The results of the study were presented at the Association’s General Assembly on Thursday 18th November 2010, at Pont de Montvert (48).
